Affiliate - What it Means
Affiliation is a relationship between companies wherein a company provides minor interest to another company. It is a give and take situation between both companies.
In today’s scenario, it is still basically true. Only that it isn’t about big and structured companies anymore. The term is applicable to individuals who help each other gain profits. They are the online merchant and the website owners or affiliates.
How Can Affiliate Marketing Help Merchants?
Why do merchants engage in affiliation marketing? The answer is simple. They need their products to be known to the buying public. Of course, the more attention you get for your product, the bigger the chance that you’ll get more sale.
So, the merchants would get in touch with website owners or vice versa and ads are placed on those websites. The ads would then catch the attention of the website’s visitors which will eventually lead them to check out the products. The visitors’ response to the ads would result to a profit for both the merchant and the affiliate.
How Does an Affiliate Earn?
You may not know how an affiliate earns from this relationship with the merchant. There are various methods, each of which should be mutually agreed upon by both parties. Here are the methods used commonly nowadays.
Per Sale - In this method, if a merchant makes a product sale due to the advertising done by the affiliate, the former will pay the latter the agreed-upon commission which will be deposited to the affiliate’s account.
Per Lead - With this method, if a visitor, as result of visiting the affiliate’s site, registers to the site hosted by the merchant, a certain amount will be accrued and paid to the affiliate’s account.
Per Click - This is probably the most common method used. With this method, an affiliate earns a certain amount everytime a visitor clicks the merchant’s link on the affiliate’s website. Although the amount earned is usually less than the other methods, no purchase is required by the visitor in order to earn something.
Things to Consider
There are some things to consider if you are interested in becoming an affiliate. One is to play fair. There are affiliates who use underhanded tactics to get profits. You’ll benefit from such tactics in the short-term but in the long-term, you and the merchant will both suffer losses. It’s a give and take situation, thus, you need to contribute something in order to rightfully get something in return.
The other thing that you need to consider is how prepared you are for the outcome. Sometimes, it takes several days or even months before someone clicks on the ad. If you’re on the per click agreement, then this is the last thing that you want to happen. To address this, I suggest you place contents that would increase the site’s appeal. Low site visit can happen also if the product is just new or if the ad was poorly created.
In order to make money online with affiliate marketing, knowing where the problems lie and addressing them right away is critical.
